| Access protocol | A protocol which controls access to the LAN. Examples are CSMA/CD and Token passing protocol. Also known as MAC protocol. | |
| ACR | Attenuation to crosstalk ratio is defined as the difference between attenuation and crosstalk measured in dB at a given frequency. This difference is critical to ensure that the signal sent down the twisted-pair cable is stronger at the receiving end of the cable than any interference signals (crosstalk) from the other pairs within the cable. For installed cabling systems, an ACR of at least 13 dB is considered acceptable for most high speed applications. | |

| Attenuation | Is a decrease in the strength of a signal over the length of a cable. This loss of energy is expressed in decibels. Lower attenuation values correspond to better cable performance. Cable attenuation is determined by the cable\'s construction, length, and the frequencies of the signals sent through the cable. | |
