Access protocol | A protocol which controls access to the LAN. Examples are CSMA/CD and Token passing protocol. Also known as MAC protocol.
ACR | Attenuation to crosstalk ratio is defined as the difference between attenuation and crosstalk measured in dB at a given frequency. This difference is critical to ensure that the signal sent down the twisted-pair cable is stronger at the receiving end of the cable than any interference signals (crosstalk) from the other pairs within the cable. For installed cabling systems, an ACR of at least 13 dB is considered acceptable for most high speed applications.
Active equipment | Data transmission equipment used for receiving, generating, or transmitting data signals.Repeaters, bridges, switches and hubs are examples.
Adapter | Can be an impedance matching or a connector adaptation (IBM data connector to RJ45 device).
ANSI | American National Standardization Institute. A non-governmental, on-profit organization that develops US standards.ANSI is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).It is the governing body responsible for EIA/TIA 568,TSB-36,TSB-40A and EIA/TIA 568A.
Appletalk | An early Apple network scheme working up to 230 kbps.
Application | A system, with its associated transmission method which is supported by telecommunications cabling.
ArcNet | Attached Resources Computing Network. Developed by Datapoint, San Antonio, TX, it is a 2.5 Mbps or 20 Mbps logical token-bus network configured in either a physical star or daisy chain .Not supported by major vendors and no IEEE support.
ATM | Asynchronous Transfer Mode. A transfer mode in which the information is organized into 53 bytes cells. It is asynchronous in the sense that recurrence of cells containing information from an individual user is not necessarily periodic.
ATM forum | The ATM forum is an international organization of constructors, service suppliers and customers of ATM founded in 1991 by 4 companies. The original work on ATM was started by the CCITT (now ITU-T) in 1988.
Attenuation | Is a decrease in the strength of a signal over the length of a cable. This loss of energy is expressed in decibels. Lower attenuation values correspond to better cable performance. Cable attenuation is determined by the cable\'s construction, length, and the frequencies of the signals sent through the cable.
AUI | Attachment Unit Interface. The coaxial cable and connectors connecting an adapter board to a transceiver.
AWG | American Wire Gauge. A standard for determining wire diameter. The higher the number, the thinner the wire.
